Tribe Talkin’: Sole Founders vs Co-Founders
Saturday Aug 05, 2023
Saturday Aug 05, 2023
Welcome to episode one of Tribe Talkin', a format where the Tribe team discusses issues hitting news rooms, as well as sharing a core concept relevant to venture capital and high growth businesses.
In this episode we discuss "The Founder", a documentary brought to life by Luke Anear from SafetyCulture, documenting Luke's behind the scene journey alongside other founders like Canva’s Melanie Perkins, Brighte’s Katherine McConnell and Finder’s Fred Schebesta
https://if.com.au/founder-trailer/
The series aims to capture the deep uncertainty, doubt, and struggle founders face in trying to create something from nothing. One journo describes it as one big circle jerk! Hhmm. It’s not every day we get to reference a circle jerk in a podcast, but here we are.
We talk about local VC news- that 9 VC funds are reported to be currently raising captive funds and what we think that means for the Australian VC industry.
We look at the Blackbird manifesto focused on start-ups coming out of research institutions. It describes some structural barriers stopping effective knowledge transfer flowing out of universities. https://www.blackbird.vc/foundry
For our concept deep dive, we look at sole Founder’s vs Co-Founder teams, and the reason we prefer multi-founders from a personal and investment perspective. Whilst we talk about the reasons we prefer these Co-Founding teams, we also discuss the big issue that sometimes plagues them: conflict. Yet whilst conflict is inevitable, it is desirable in the right conditions, and we give a few simple ideas on how to manage it. The full blog article on the topic can be found here: https://tribeglobal.vc/why-co-founders-teams/
As with all our content, we’ve love to hear from you, especially if you have a different view. If you like what you hear, we’d really appreciate if you can rate the podcast and any comments are always welcome.

Founder Focus Ep 1: Vu Tran of GO1
Friday Jul 14, 2023
Friday Jul 14, 2023
For our very first podcast, we are genuinely humbled to have been joined by Vu Tran, one of the co-founders of Australian unicorn Go1. For those who don’t know the Go1 story – Go1 is ‘the Spotify for learning content creators’. Started in (and still headquartered in) suburban Brisbane, Go1 now has a global presence, and still helmed by four friends who as a co-founding team have been together for over 16 years – quite a rarity in the world of start-ups. And a fun fact, when he is not growing one of Australia’s most successful start-ups, Vu also has time to work as a GP one day a week in his local community. Impressive.
One of Tribe’s cofounders Elaine Stead invested in Go1 very early in their journey, and this podcast covers that period and much more including:
Founder origin storyThe importance of knowing your level, and aiming higher
Co-foundership
Navigating interpersonal conflict and ego
The benefit of hierarchy and explicit co-founder roles and accountability
Luck vs skill
Difficult and unpopular decisions
Risk taking vs gambling
Learning from mistakes as the real success coefficient
Scaling up mistakes
Fundraising and investor types
Elaine's rationale for investing early into Go1 around the time they were pivoting from a LMS to a market place
The importance of significant others
Conviction
We hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed making it and please drop any comments below.
